On June 10th, 2019, the Vietnam - USA Joint Mathematical Meeting 2019 Opening Ceremony was held at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), Qui Nhon city, Binh Dinh province.
The Opening ceremony was honored to have the presence of Mr. Le Hai An - Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Training, Mr. Ho Quoc Dung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Dinh Province, Mr. Nguyen Tam Chien - President of the Vietnam - USA Society and Former Ambassador of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United States of America, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cong - Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and representatives of Binh Dinh provincial ministries, media and press agencies in Binh Dinh Province. Also attending the opening ceremony are representatives of the Program Committee: Prof. Brian Boe - Secretary of the American Mathematical Society and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau - Scientific Director of Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Professor at the University of Chicago, along with other members of the Program Committee and heads of special sessions, Prof. Ngo Viet Trung - President of the Vietnamese Mathematical Society. The Local Organizing Committees includes Associate Prof. Le Minh Ha - Managing Director of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Associate Prof. Do Ngoc My - Rector of Quy Nhon University, and Mr. Tran Thanh Son - Deputy Director of the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education, and especially nearly three hundred scientists from universities and research institutes in Vietnam, the United States, and other countries.
In the opening speech, Prof. Ngo Viet Trung - President of the Vietnamese Mathematical Society - welcomed all delegates and emphasized the meaning and importance of the Meeting to the development of Vietnam - USA cooperation, not only in Mathematics, but in all fields, because Mathematics has no boundary, no discrimination based on age, ethnicity, or skin color.
Representing the American Mathematical Society, Prof. Brian Boe sent his gratitude to the Vietnamese Mathematical Society for working together and enhancing the relation between the two mathematical societies, to the Program and Organizing Committee for their dedication in the preparation of the Meeting, and to the sponsors for their support for the Meeting. He hoped that Vietnam - USA relation will strengthen following the success of the Meeting.
Deputy Minister Le Hai An, on behalf of the Minister of Education warmly welcomed the delegates to the Meeting. He expressed his joy about the development of scientific collaboration between Vietnam and the United States, especially in the field of Mathematics, and expressed his hope that the two mathematical societies will focus on collaborative plans not only in theoretical but also in the many applications of mathematics, and universalization of math and math education to better aid the young generation, realizing the fact that mathematics is not just a universal cultural value of humanity, but also a powerful tool that creates extensive applications, especially in the age of digital revolution. He believed that the education of Mathematics needs more attention, for even students who are not particularly strong in math. The Deputy Minister also praised the initiative of organizing a Forum Math for Industry, which will be held at Quy Nhon University in the afternoon of June 11th, 2019.
On behalf of Binh Dinh provincial leaders, Mr. Ho Quoc Dung also expressed his joy and gratitude to delegates, and prominent mathematicians from Vietnam and around the world for their participation in the Vietnam-USA Joint Mathematical Meeting 2019 in Quy Nhon. In addition to his delight for the strengthening of Vietnam - USA relation, he hoped that the Meeting will be the delegates’ gateway to exploring the culture, history, nature, and people of Binh Dinh.
After the ceremony, the first plenary talk was given by Prof. Le Tuan Hoa - Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Hội nghị Toán học Việt - Mỹ 2019 diễn ra từ ngày 10-13/6/2019 tại Trung tâm Quốc tế Khoa học và The Vietnam-USA Joint Mathematical Meeting 2019 takes place from June 10th to June 13th at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education. The Meeting’s main activities include 6 plenary talks and 200 invited addresses from 13 special sessions (among which 122 are from foreign scientists and Vietnamese scientists working abroad, and 78 from Vietnamese working in Vietnam). In addition, also a poster session is also organized with the participation from nearly 30 young scientists (postgraduates, researchers, and researchers recently obtained their PhDs). In the framework of the Meeting, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Quy Nhon University, and the Big Data Institute of Vingroup will hold the Forum Math for Industry in the afternoon of June 11th, 2019 at Quy Nhon University.
The Meeting is mainly sponsored by the National Program for the Development in Mathematics period 2010-2020 (NPDM). The Big Data Institute of Vingroup and the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education provide further support for young scientists, both domestic and international, to participate in the Meeting and the Forum Math for Industry.
