Two Vietnamese scientists won the 2013 Ta Quang Buu Award

Professor Nguyen Huu Viet Hung and Associate Professor Nguyen Ba An received the 2013 Ta Quang Buu Award at a ceremony in Hanoi on May 17. This is the first time the Ministry of Science and Technology has presented the prize, named after famous Vietnamese scientist Professor Ta Quang Buu (1910-1986), to outstanding scientists in the fundamental studies of natural sciences.

The two winning scientists were selected from the 52 submissions. Prof. Nguyen Huu Viet Hung from the University of Sciences under Vietnam National University in Hanoi won in maths for his work ‘The homomorphisms between the Dickson-Mùi algebras as modules over the Steenrod algebra’, which was published in Mathematische Annalen in 2012.

Prof. Nguyen Huu Viet Hung.

Prof. Hung is also a member of VIASM’s Scientific Council. He often gives valuable comments to the Institute’s policy as well as its scientific activities. In 2013, Prof Hung was the chair of the research group Algebraic Topology and the Algebraic Topology Program in VIASM. Prof. Hung’s group always work closely with a group of French mathematicians including Prof. Lionel Schwartz (Paris 13) and recently they are key participants of the mini-course “Group cohomology and T-functor” given by Prof. Jean Lannes (Paris Diderot or Paris 7).

Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Ba An from the Vietnam Academy of Science And Technology won the award for his work ‘Joint remote state preparation via W and W-type states’, which was published in Optics Communications in 2010.

The Award honours individuals and groups who have made outstanding achievements to the field and published excellent scientific research in prestigious international journals. It is believed that the Award will contribute greatly to promoting fundamental scientific research as well as science and technology development in Vietnam.

The Award, including one to three main prizes, one prize for a young scientist under 30 and one prize for a scientist who makes positive contributions to fundamental study in Vietnam, will be presented annually.

Congratulations to Prof. Nguyen Huu Viet Hung and Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Ba An!
