A key challenge in many scientific and technological problems is to better understand the collective behavior (macroscopic properties) of a complex system from its microscopic elements.

In this talk, I will discuss three problems that arise from material sciences, molecular dynamics and evolutionary game theory.  Through these examples, I will show (1) how interesting mathematical problems emerge from real applications and (2) how a combination of techniques from different fields of mathematics, particularly from analysis and probability, can be the key to tackle them.
