Reduction number is a measure for the complexity of the structure of an algebra over a field. It has relations with Betti table, local cohomology and other invariants of the algebra. In this talk I first review several properties of this number from the work of NV Trung, Vasconcelos and others. Then I discuss our work recently on bounding reduction number of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a projective subscheme by means of other invariants and characterize the border cases.
