Mini-course on Character bounds for simple groups and applications

Time:

Venue/Location: Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), Hanoi

Lecturer: Prof. Pham Huu Tiep, Rutgers University, USA

Abstract: Given the current knowledge of complex representations of finite (quasi)simple groups, obtaining good upper bounds for their characters values still remains a difficult problem, a satisfactory solution of which would have significant implications in a number of applications. We will report on recent results that produce such character bounds, and discuss some such applications, including random walks on finite simple groups and Thompson's conjecture.

Participants: The mini-course will be accessible to graduate students, postdocs, and researchers who are interested in group theory, representation theory, and applications to other areas of mathematics.

Format: Hybrid (Zoom link will be available for participants from outside Hanoi)

Language: English and Vietnamese
