Spring School and Workshop on Variational Analysis and Optimization 2025

Time:

Venue/Location: Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), Hanoi

Objective

Variational analysis is a well-recognized area of mathematics with many applications to optimization, control, equilibria, stability, machine learning, statistics, as well as to practical models of science and technology. The underlying feature of variational analysis is the broad usage of generalized differentiation, which allows us to deal with nonsmooth functions, sets with nonsmooth boundaries, and set-valued mappings. Such objects naturally and frequently appear not only in problems with nonsmooth initial data but mainly due to employing variational or extremal principles and techniques.

Nowadays, qualitative analysis of optimization problems and equilibrium problems, as well as effective algorithms to solve the problems, rely greatly on variational analysis.

These School and Workshop “Variational Analysis and Optimization 2025” aim at creating a broad international forum to present fundamental principles of variational analysis and optimization theory, to exchange new results and novel ideas in the field. There are 62 confirmed invited speakers, many among them are internationally well-known scholars, from 17 countries.

Since March 14 will be "Pi day" (pi=3.14...), a Public Lectures Session within the Workshop is organized to highlight the beauty and importance of Mathematics and Mathematical Applications. The two lectures are given for a large audience, including the participants of the Workshop and the School.
