LMS Global Meeting, Hanoi

Time:

Venue/Location: Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), Hanoi

Objective

The Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics hosts a meeting of the London Mathematical Society for the first time with focus on the interface of computer science and mathematics. The event will have plenary lectures, tutorial courses, and a public lecture on the following themes.

  • Applications of machine learning to mathematics;
  • Mathematics of machine learning;
  • Computation and proof.
  • Machine learning and challenges to humanity.

The proposed topics are globally important and of growing interest in Southeast Asia. Notable developments, such as the collaboration between DeepMind and topologists, demonstrate the potential of AI in mathematics, while mathematics itself is contributing to understanding neural networks. Fields like analysis, geometry, combinatorics, and algebra are seeing new challenges from AI-related problems. There is interest in Vietnam and other neighbouring countries (not just in the academic community but also among the public) in AI and scientific discovery in general. There is also concern about the rapid progress being made in the US, China, and Europe and how other countries will keep up with and benefit from this development. This is one of the reasons why this topic is well-suited for countries like Vietnam.
