About speaker
Dr. Le Si Dang is Emeritus CNRS Research Director at Institut Néel, Grenoble. He received his Thèse d’État ès Sciences Physiques in 1978 from Université J. Fourier–Grenoble. His research centers on the physics and optical properties of semiconductor nanostructures, including II-VI, III-V and III-nitride quantum wells, nanowires, quantum dots, LEDs and lasers. He has also made major contributions to microcavity exciton polaritons—studying condensates, nonlinearities and Rydberg states—and to low-dimensional hybrid organic–inorganic metal-halide perovskites. In 2006 his collaborative team achieved the first Bose–Einstein condensation of exciton polaritons in the solid state, reported in Nature and featured on the cover. This landmark result established polaritonics as a new field for exploring macroscopic quantum phenomena at elevated temperatures and for potential optoelectronic and quantum-information applications. In 2010 he was awarded the Gentner-Kastler Prize by the French and German Physical Societies for outstanding contributions to the physics of low-dimensional semiconductors. Earlier work demonstrated optical detection of magnetic resonance as a powerful probe of defects, the first optical determination of piezoelectric fields in strained quantum wells, and record-gain ultrafast polariton parametric amplification. He reported the first observation of a double threshold distinguishing stimulated polariton emission from conventional photon lasing, and later the spontaneous formation of quantized vortices in a polariton condensate. These achievements stem from sustained international collaborations and have shaped both fundamental understanding and technological prospects in semiconductor quantum optics.
