Mini-Course: Snapshots in Kinetic Theory

Objective:

Kinetic theory plays an important role in describing the dynamics of a gas consisting of infinitely many interacting particles (i.e. key to resolve the Hilbert's 6th problem), and the topics course will provide mathematical background, foundational techniques, as well as most recent advances in establishing the wellposedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions to kinetic models, centering around collisionless Vlasov theory such as Vlasov-Poisson, Vlasov-Maxwell, and Vlasov-Klein-Gordon systems. The study of physical phenomena such as phase mixing, Landau damping, plasma oscillations, plasma echoes, resonances, wave-wave interaction, trapped particles, and coherent structures will be thoroughly introduced. Each of the lectures is designed to be of independent interest, and no prior knowledge or research experience is needed. Not only does the course provide the sufficient mathematical foundation to enter the trendy research area, but also does it prepare the current state of the art with several open problems for further investigation. The lectures are accessible to advanced undergraduate, graduate students, and general audience.
