An ideal I is said to have the persistence property if (Ass I^n)_n form an increasing sequence with respect to inclusion. Swanson and R. Walker ask whether if I and J are ideals in different polynomial rings over a field k, and both of them have the persistence property, then so does the sum I+J? We discuss this question, and several related problems. For example, we give an affirmative answer when I is a monomial ideal with the persistence property, and J is arbitrary (with the persistence property or not).
