Bài giảng Đại chúng: The Social Context of Mathematics
Time:
Venue/Location: Hội trường K, Trường Đại học Sư Phạm Hà Nội
ABSTRACT: Mathematicians should be more aware of the deficiencies in the relation between mathematics and the broader society and more involved in removing them. I will discuss several questions of social context: (1) The misuse of mathematics, especially in the non-sciences, but also sometimes in areas of the applied mathematical sciences, such as cryptography. (2) The boom-and-bust cycle of vastly over-hyped new types of technology that at first generate great excitement, in part because of the mistaken popular belief that the underlying math can create magic. (3) The stubborn lack of diversity in our profession, with no rapid improvement in recent years in the number of students from underrepresented groups (women, young people from economically disadvantaged communities, ethnic minorities, students from poor countries) that are going into careers in the mathematical sciences. (4) A long history of mathematicians giving bad advice to educators, rather than the type of helpful suggestions that we could easily be making.
About the lecturer: Neal Koblitz received his PhD from Princeton University in 1974. After postdocs at Harvard University, Moscow State University, and the Steklov Institute in Moscow, he went to the University of Washington, where he has been a professor since 1979. In 1985 he co-invented Elliptic Curve Cryptography, and soon after invented Hyperelliptic Curve Cryptography. He has written 6 books, about 60 research articles, and an equal number of non-technical and general interest articles. Between 2016 and 2024 he has written 18 articles for Tia Sáng magazine.
Neal and his wife Ann direct the Kovalevskaia Fund, which sponsors prizes for women scientists and mathematicians in Vietnam, Mexico, and Cuba. In addition, they own and manage 150 hectares of forest land located not far from their home in University of Washington, Seattle.
