Introduction and objectives: Mathematical Modeling provides a bridge between Mathematics and many areas of life. The purpose of this course is to give students guidance to use the basic knowledge in high school mathematics, to model some real-world problems via mathematical formulae, and then solve those problems by mathematical tools. Furthermore, the course is also aimed at helping students to form and develop the necessary skills in analyzing the sensitivity and robustness of the models, the ability to evaluate the advantages, disadvantages and the applicability of the model. The course focuses on the two main categories of mathematical models that are most appropriate to the background of high school students: optimization models and statistics models.
The course will begin with a short lecture by Prof. Tran Xuan Bach on Questions on Epidemics and Maths, then follows by a series of seven 3-hour classes by Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Phan, on various topics in mathematical modeling. On the final day of the course, some internationally known competitions in mathematical modeling will be introduced. Students will have opportunity to analyze the problems in the recent years of those competitions, and the corresponding winning papers.
The course is most beneficial to students in grade 11. The course is fully supported by the National Program for the Development of Mathematics.
Due to the school lockdown by SARS-CoV-2, the course will be taught online via Zoom. The class ID will be sent to the admitted participants.
Registration deadline: The registration link will automatically be shut down when the number of selected participants reaches the maximum class size of approximately 40.
Requirement: Students have a laptop fully functional to an online class taught via Zoom. The laptop should have Microsoft Excel and Lindo installed. The pre-installation of Maple is not required, but is strongly recommended.
Lindo is free to download at the following website, the Classic Lindo is adequate and is preferred.
