NUS - VIASM Colloquium: From invariant polynomials to invariant distributions

Purpose: Hoạt động nằm trong chuỗi hợp tác của NUS và VIASM, mở đầu bằng Colloquium của GS Zhu Chengbo, với mục đích tăng cường các hợp tác khoa học và đào tạo. Trân trọng kính mời anh chị em đồng nghiệp tham dự và tham gia thảo luận sau colloquium về hợp tác nghiên cứu đào tạo giữa hai bên như các hoạt động ở dạng joint conference hay summer schools, các research in pairs để thúc đẩy hợp tác để giúp cho việc xây dựng một vài nhóm nghiên cứu Singapore-Vietnam vv.

Zhu Chengbo - From invariant polynomials to invariant distributions

In his famous book “The Classical Groups: Their Invariants and Representations” published in 1939, Herman Weyl expounded the guiding role of invariant theory in representation theory. His work laid much of the foundation of representations of compact Lie groups as well as rational representations of algebraic groups. The publication of the six-volume work of I.M. Gelfand et al. on “Generalized Functions” in the 1960’s had a similarly profound impact, and since then generalized functions (or distributions) had become an indispensable tool in representation theory. In this talk, I will discuss these broad ideas and some recent developments in classical groups and their smooth representations. The role of invariant distributions will be emphasized.
