Public Lecture: Recent Applications of Variational Analysis

Time:

Venue/Location: Laurent Schwartz Hall - VIASM

Lecturer: Boris Mordukhovich, Wayne State University, USA

Abstract: In this public lecture, we discuss, in a way accessible for any mathematician, some recent developments in variational analysis, nonsmooth optimization, and optimal control. They include nonsmooth Newtonian methods and optimal control of sweeping processes. The main attention is paid to applications of the obtained results to, on one side, problems of machine learning and statistics and, on the other side, to dynamical models arising in robotics, traffic equilibria, and nanotechnology.

About the lecturer:

Boris S. Mordukhovich is a Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at Wayne State University, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to variational analysis, optimization, and control theory. Born in Moscow, Russia, he earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Belarus State University in 1973. His pioneering research has played a fundamental role in shaping modern nonsmooth analysis and optimization, with widespread applications in economics, engineering, and data science.

Professor Mordukhovich has received multiple honorary doctorates from prestigious institutions worldwide, including National Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan), Alicante University (Spain), University of Messina (Italy), BabeČ™-Bolyai University (Romania), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and Vasile GoldiČ™ University (Romania). He is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

His research has earned him numerous international awards and recognitions, and his contributions continue to shape the field of optimization, control, and applied mathematics. Through his work, Professor Mordukhovich remains a key figure in advancing mathematical theory and its real-world applications.
