Abstract: There has been considerable interest in recent years in finding combinatorial invariants that provide lower bounds for the depth of R/I when I is a monomial ideal. In general, these bounds do not shed light on the regular sequences that give the depth. For powers of I, Terai and Trung have given a nice classification of when depth(R/I^2) is positive. In this talk, which represents joint work with Louiza Fouli and Tai Ha, we focus on finding regular elements and regular sequences on R/I and in using regular sequences to determine conditions under which depth(R/I^2) \geq 2.
