Abstract: The notion of residual intersection, which generalizes linkage, has its origins in enumerative geometry and intersection theory, but arises naturally in many contexts. We will talk about residual intersections of a class of ideals that fail to satisfy the strong conditions that are usually imposed in this area, namely ideals of minors of a generic 2 by n matrix. This is a report on joint work with David Eisenbud and Craig Huneke, and with David Eisenbud, respectively.
