Abstract: I will discuss some interplay between gravitational scattering theory and the properties of asymptotically flat spacetimes. We will see how particles are most naturally defined as quantities living on the spacetime boundaries, which are carrollian manifolds endowed with a degenerate metric. Scattering amplitudes can then be understood as correlation functions of a field theory defined on these carrollian manifolds. I will explain how this fact leads to the idea of celestial/carrollian holography. In addition I will explain how the symmetries of the carrollian boundaries control the low-energy limit of graviton amplitudes (soft theorems and infrared divergences).
