The Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) invites applications for research funding from research groups or individual research to conduct short-term research at the Institute in 2027. The working period ranges from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 1 year. 

Applicants may be research groups or individuals, from Vietnam or abroad, working in the field of Mathematical Sciences, including computational science, statistics, data science, artificial intelligence, cryptography, quantum computing, computational biology,  and related areas.

Important Note: 

Priority will be given to: 

• Research groups with novel research topics compared to previous projects. 
• Groups that include collaborations with international scientists or Vietnamese scientists working abroad.  

Funding Eligibility Restriction: 

• Applicants who are Principal Investigators of research projects funded by the National Key Program for the Development of Mathematics (NPDM)  2021-2030, implemented in 2027, will not be eligible for this funding. This restriction applies to both group leaders and group members.  

1. Research Groups

• VIASM encourages applications from research groups, but also welcomes outstanding individual applicants. 
• The VIASM Scientific Council will evaluate applicants based on their credentials and the Institute’s financial capacity, classifying researchers into five categories: Distinguished Professor, Senior Research Fellow, Principal Research Fellow, Research Fellow, and Junior Research Fellow. 

Application dossier for research groups: 

1. Curriculum vitae (CVs) of the group leader, members, invited researchers, and students. While invited researchers may be added after group approval, VIASM strongly encourages applicants to include this information in the initial submission.  
2. Research proposal: must be written in English and not exceed 5 pages (excluding references). 

2. Postdoctoral Fellows 

• In 2027, VIASM will select up to five (05) postdoctoral fellows for young researchers who obtained their Ph.D. after January 1, 2021. 
• The appointment period is up to 1 year, with the possibility of a 1-year extension based on exceptional research performance.

3. Application dossier for postdoctoral fellows: 

1. Curriculum vitae and research proposal (written in English, not exceeding 5 pages, excluding references);
2. Two (02) letters of recommendation (in English), sent directly to VIASM by the referees;
3. Doctoral degree certificate;
4. Complete doctoral thesis;
5. Comments from the thesis defense committee (if available).

Note: Letter of recommendation (item 2) must be sent directly by the referees to application@viasm.edu.vn  with the email subject line: “VIASM2027–[Applicant’s Name]” before the deadline of December 31, 2025.

• Application Submission 

All application materials must be submitted directly through the VIASM Research Management System (VIASM RMS) at: https://portal.viasm.edu.vn/.

4. Benefits and Responsibilities

4.1. Benefits

For Research Fellows: 

• Research fellows will receive favorable working conditions, research funding, and salary retention from their home institutions (if they are working at Vietnam public institutions). 
• Honoraria will be based on the researcher’s position at VIASM and the state-regulated base salary.
• For research fellows from outside Hanoi or from abroad, VIASM may arrange and provide support accommodation and travel expenses (if the length of stay is sufficiently long).

For Research Groups: 

• In addition to supporting individual group members, VIASM may provide funding academic activities such as conferences, workshops, or schools, mini-courses. These activities may be included in the research proposal or submitted no later than June 30, 2026, after the group approval. 
• VIASM may invite and fund guest researchers (including accommodation, local travel, and living allowances), particularly  international scientists or Vietnamese scientists working abroad, as proposed by research groups for collaborative research. 
• VIASM may also provide support for students participating in group activities.
• Research groups are encouraged to provide detailed information about invited researchers and students at the time of application submission.  

4.2. Responsibilities

• Research fellows must dedicate their full working time to research activities at VIASM during the approved period.
• All research outputs conducted (wholly or partially) during the research period at VIASM must acknowledge VIASM’s support.

5. Application Procedure

For Group Leaders: 

• Creates a “Research Proposal” in the system.
• Registers the list of members, invited researchers, and students.
• Submits the complete application through the VIASM Research Management System (VIASM RMS). 

For Group Members: 

• After receiving an invitation from the group leader via email, log in to VIASM RMS to update your curriculum vitae.
• Access your group’s “Research Project Page” to provide additional information regarding proposed working period, accommodation, travel support, etc.

For Existing RMS users: 

• Update your academic CV and publication list (include up to 10 selected publications from the past 3 years), particularly highlight research outcomes from previous visits to VIASM.

Final Review

• Group leaders must verify all information related to the research proposal and individual funding requests before the final submission. Please ensure that all information is complete and consistent. 
•  Applications without complete CVs will not be accepted.

System Information

Starting in 2024, VIASM implemented a new Research Management System (RMS). The database from the previous system (rms.viasm.edu.vn) has been preserved and migrated to the new platform.
