Activities of Special Semester on Commutative Algebra at VIASM

The Special Semester on Commutative Algebra has taken place at VIASM from 1 December 2013 until 28 February 2014. The program gathered 17 professors and research fellows from 6 cities across the country (Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City) to come to work at VIASM. In addition, there have been many other foreign professors (from USA, France, Switzerland, Japan, Italy, Spain) coming to give lectures as well as collaborating in research with Vietnamese research fellows.

Besides working in sub-groups, there have been 2 seminars each week which attracted many colleagues from other institutions. There have been 50 lectures on most of contemporary research in Commutative Algebra and related fields.

One of the notable events of the programe is the International conference on Commutative Algebra and Its Interaction to Algebraic Geometry and Combinatorics jointly organized by Institute of Mathematics – VAST and VIASM in the end of 2013 which attracted around 100 mathematicians, among them there were over 60 internationals. There were 12 plenary talks and other 52 sessions talks. It was said to be one of the biggest conferences on Commutative Algebra in the world recently.

The research group on Commuative Algebra at VIASM strongly believes that the Semester at VIASM will further promote reseach in Commutaive Algebra and related fields such as Algebraic Geometry, Singularity Theory and Combinatorics in Vietnam.
