Maxim Kontsevich has won the 2012 Shaw Prize in the Mathematical Sciences “for his pioneering works in algebra, geometry and mathematical physics and in particular deformation quantization, motivic integration and mirror symmetry.” The prize carries with it a monetary award of US$1 million.
Kontsevich is a permanent professor at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques and a distinguished professor at the University of Miami. Among his other awards are the Henri Poincaré Prize in 1997, the Fields Medal in 1998, and the Crafoord Prize in 2008.
The Shaw Prizes are awarded annually by the Shaw Prize Foundation, which will award the 2012 prizes in Hong Kong in September.
