Summer school on Bayesian modeling, computation and applications

From July 23 to August 1, 2025, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), in collaboration with the College of Economics, Law and Government – University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH-CELG), successfully organized the Summer School on Bayesian Modelling, Computation and Applications, with the participation of nearly 90 lecturers, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates from both Vietnam and abroad.

Participants of the Summer School

This was the third edition of the Summer School on Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning, focusing on key topics such as hierarchical models, dynamic models, Bayesian computation, and applications. The program aimed to provide participants with both a solid theoretical foundation and modern methodological approaches, while also opening up opportunities for networking, research collaboration, and postgraduate study pathways.

Delegates and participants at the Summer School Opening Ceremony

At the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lê Minh Hà – Executive Director of VIASM, and Dr. Đinh Công Khải – Vice President of UEH, emphasized the significance of the Summer School as a testimony to the strong partnership between the two institutions in advancing academic quality and research capacity.

This year’s Summer School featured three main themes alongside a number of advanced lectures delivered by leading international experts in statistics. The lecture series on Bayesian modelling and inference, presented by Prof. Steve MacEachern (Ohio State University, USA) and Prof. Peter Mueller (University of Texas, Austin, USA), provided theoretical foundations and core analytical methods. Prof. Yanxun Xu (Johns Hopkins University, USA) and Prof. Garritt Page (Brigham Young University, USA) then introduced advanced techniques in Bayesian computation and variational Bayes, addressing both theoretical developments and practical applications. The program concluded with specialized lectures on spatio-temporal data and applications in biostatistics and biomedical research, presented by Prof. Hau-Tieng Wu (New York University, USA), Prof. Veera Baladandayuthapani (University of Michigan, USA), and Prof. Peter Mueller. Altogether, the program not only consolidated participants’ foundational knowledge but also introduced modern approaches, helping them engage with the latest trends in Bayesian statistics.

International professors teaching in the program

As part of the program, the Workshop on Statistical Modelling and Applications (July 25–26, 2025) was held, bringing together over 200 participants from universities across Vietnam and abroad. Fourteen scientific talks were delivered, offering a comprehensive perspective on advances in Bayesian statistics and data science – from fundamental theory to interdisciplinary applications. The workshop served as a bridge between theoretical research and practice, fostering academic exchange and broadening collaboration.

Academic activities were complemented by cultural and local experiences, most notably a field trip to the Mekong Delta, which gave the 2025 Summer School its distinctive mark: academically rigorous while also rich in exchange and connection. The success of the program once again affirmed VIASM’s role in promoting high-quality research, training, and integration into the international scientific community.

The Organizing Committee hopes that the knowledge, experiences, and collaborations built during the Summer School will further develop into joint research projects, high-quality scientific publications, and new academic programs in the future.
