Summer School Series on Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning

To facilitate and engage in the training and development of high-quality human resources in applied mathematics, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) organized the Summer School on Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning from July 24-30, 2024, in Hanoi. The event attracted 114 participants, including students, postgraduate students, lecturers, and researchers from various domestic and international institutions.

During the opening ceremony of the Summer School, Assoc. Prof. Le Minh Ha, Managing Director of VIASM, expressed his gratitude to the Program Committee, lecturers, and invited speakers who contributed to designing the program and participated in teaching and presentations. Assoc. Prof. Le Minh Ha emphasized that VIASM always focuses on and develops research directions related to applications, including the establishment of the Vietnam Applied Statistics Network (VASN). This Summer School is one of the key events organized by the VASN in 2024.

The summer school featured a series of lectures by distinguished professors: Alexandre Thiery from the National University of Singapore, Ji Zhu from the University of Michigan, USA, and Minwoo Chae from Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea. Prof. Ji Zhu delivered a sequence of lectures on network analysis, an active research area involving the use of networks and graphs for modelling complex and modern data. Prof. Alexandre Thiery taught “Diffusion and flows”, with focus on the mathematics and Bayesian computation underpinning some of the most recent advances in statistical machine learning and AI. Prof. Minwoo Chae’s sequence of lectures “Nonparametric estimation and deep learning” was carefully interleaved with Thiery’s lectures to provide the statistical theory and insights elucidating the capabilities of the aforementioned deep network models. Following each lecture, participants are provided with dedicated TA sessions during which they can engage in discussions with professors and teaching assistants, as well as directly apply the content from the lectures.

As part of the Summer School, a workshop on Bayesian Learning and Network Analysis was held, featuring 14 invited talks from experts in Vietnam, the USA, Australia, Italy, South Korea, and a poster session on the afternoon of July 26, 2024. In his opening remarks at the workshop, Prof. Ngo Bao Chau extended a warm welcome to the scientists attending the event at VIASM. He expressed his belief that both the Summer School on Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning and the conference itself would serve as significant milestones in the advancement of Vietnamese Mathematical Statistics.
