The Centre de Recerca Matematica (CRM) invites proposals for Research Programmes for the academic year 2014-2015.

Guidelines

1. CRM Research Programs consist of periods of intensive research in a given area of the mathematical sciences and their applications, bringing together researchers from different institutions to work on open problems in the chosen area, and to analyze its present state and perspectives.

2. The CRM opens an annual call for CRM Research Programmes two academic years in advance. The CRM Scientific Advisory Board is responsible for the review process of the proposals and their evaluation. Main points in the decision-making are: scientific quality, interdisciplinary aspects, expected impact, participation of young researchers, and availability through the organizers of other sources of financial support.

3. The CRM Research Programmes can run for periods from two to five months (within the periods September to December and February to June).

4. Each programme must have a Scientific Committee, which is fully responsible for:

    • a) The planning of all activities included in the programme.

    • b) The elaboration of the list of participants, in ranking priorities.

    • c) The submission of a final report of the programme within two months after its completion.

5. One of the members of the Scientific Committee should act as coordinator of the programme. At least one member of the committee should be present at all times during the programme. The coordinator will be responsible for the scientific performance of the research programme through the encouragement of interaction among the participants and their involvement in the programme’s activities.

6. Typically, participants in a programme include:

    • a) Senior research visitors.

    • b) Post-doctoral fellows.

    • c) Advanced PhD students.

  • Researchers are expected to be present at the CRM on a full-time basis. Visits should be at least one-month long. It is expected that local researchers participating in a programme negotiate with their home institutions their full-time commitment to the activity.

7. A Research Programme will typically include, besides daily interactions among the participants, the following scientific events:

    • a) Weekly working seminars.

    • b) Intensive workshops, 3 to 5 days long, preferably open to researchers not participating in the programme.

  • c) Advanced courses addressed to graduate students. The CRM encourages the production of edited notes of the courses, which may be published in the Birkhäuser series Advanced Courses in Mathematics CRM Barcelona.

8. The CRM offers its Administrative staff to manage the Programme and its facilities. The CRM will offer a starting basic funding which could be later on enhanced by the successsful applications from outside funds. The basic funding consists on covering the accommodation expenses of four visits per month, in average (in one of the aprtments of the on-campus housing) and in addition, the per-diem expenses of some young participants selected by the Scientific Committee.

9. The coordinators and other members of the Scientific Committee should commit themselves in fund-raising from outside sources. CRM will assist the Scientific Committee with all the administrative work related with these applications.

10. Once the programme has been approved by the CRM, the organisers will be contacted by the Director in order to agree on the following:

    • a) Final dates and length of the programme.

    • b) Final list of participants, period of their research visits, financial support offered by the CRM, and financing sources, if other than the CRM.

    • c) Final scientific format of the programme, including a list of its scientific events and participants.

  • The terms of agreement between the CRM and the organizers will be jointly signed by the CRM Director and the coordinator of the programme. After the approval of a programme, a contact person from the CRM will be designated to assist the Scientific Committee with organizational matters related to it.

11. The CRM acts as the organizational unit for all activities (workshops, advanced courses, etc.) included in the programme, for accommodation arrangements, and general administration. Invitation letters will be sent by the CRM.
