The VMS-SMF Joint Congress has opened this morning (20th August, 2012) at Hue University, Hue City.
This is the first international joint congress between Vietnam Mathematical Society (VMS) and a foreign Mathematical Society (French Mathematical Society – SMF). The important event attracts about 90 French mathematicians, 350 Vietnamese mathematicians and more than 20 mathematicians from all over the world.
The congress is held in order to strengthen and promote the cooperation in mathematical research between France and Vietnam, as well as between Vietnam and other countries.
Distinguished guests of the Opening Ceremony includes Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Quang Quy, Chairman of Thua Thien Hue province Nguyen Van Cao, and the Director of Hue University Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Toan.
Speeches at the Opening Ceremony remark the history of mathematical cooperation between France and Vietnam, in which the most remarkable event was the work awarded Fields medal in 2010 of Prof. Ngo Bao Chau.
The speeches also mention the wish to further promote the cooperation between the two scientific environments in order to improve the roles of mathematics in other areas, contributing to the development of the countries.
The first two plenary talks are given at the ceremony: one by Prof. J.C Yoccoz (Collége de France, Paris) and the other by Prof. H. Esnault (Univeristy of Duisburg-Essen).
There will be 13 plenary talks and one public lectures given by the leading mathematicians in the world.
From this afternoon, participants will be devided into 15 parallel sessions to discuss. There will be more than 150 reports in parallel sessions during 5 days.
The congress will be closed on Friday, 24 August 2012.
