Workshop on “Topics in Contemporary Differential Geometry”

On August 19, 2023, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) organized the Workshop on “Topics in Contemporary Differential Geometry”. The workshop was an activity in the VIASM - ICTP Summer School in Differential Geometry 2023, sponsored by ICTP, CLAY and IMU-CDC.
The workshop on contemporary differential geometry provides a platform for outstanding undergraduates, graduate students, and early-career mathematicians to study the fundamentals of differential geometry that are closely related to recent groundbreaking developments. Specific topics include Kähler geometry, Ricci curvature, spinors, and minimal surfaces.

Speakers and participants on the first day

The workshop program took place in one day with 6 reports from the well-known researhers and young mathematicians: Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon (IHES, France), Prof. Shin-Ichi Ohta (Osaka, Japan), Prof. Richard Schoen (Stanford, USA), Prof. Timothy Buttsworth (Queensland, Australia), Dr. Gunhee Cho (UCSB, USA) and Dr. Nguyễn Minh Hoàng (VNU, Vietnam).
In particular, the conference created very nice, friend spaces for students and young researchers to have the opportunity to listen to and talk directly with experts in the field of Differential Geometry.

Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon presented his talk

Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon reports spinors from a mathematician’s point of view. The talk review recent results concerning several questions in Differential Geometry to which spinors provided some important clues.

Prof. Shin-Ichi Ohta gave a talk

An interesting report by Prof. Shin-Ichi Ohta on geometry of weighted Finsler spacetimes. The talk introduce a nice development of theory of Ricci curvature on these objects.

Dr. Gunhee Cho delivered the lecture

Dr. Gunhee Cho give a talk on some recent new Bochner techniques. He introduce some rigidity results and investigate vanishing properties of harmonic forms on Riemann and Kahler manifolds.

Prof. Richard Schoen  gave a talk

Prof. Richard Schoen gave a lecture on recent results on Bernstein–type theorems for stable minimal surfaces in high codimension.

Prof. Timothy Buttsworth presented his lecture

Prof. Timothy Buttsworth presented his discovery on the construction of special geometric structures and how they fit in the current literature.

Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoang presented at the workshop

Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoang presented a new construction of complete, embedded minimal annuli asymptotic to vertical planes in the Riemnnian 3D-manifold

In addition to professional reports, the conference also organized a visit to Ha Long bay - the UNESCO World Heritage and tea parties between hours to create opportunities for scientists to meet, seek opportunities for cooperation and academic exchange.
