VMS – SMF Joint Congress to open

This is the first international joint congress between Vietnam Mathematical Society (VMS) and a foreign Mathematical Society (French Mathematical Society - SMF). The important event attracts about 90 French mathematicians, 350 Vietnamese mathematicians and more than 20 mathematicians from all over the world.

The Centre de Recerca Matematica (CRM) invites proposals for Research Programmes for the academic year 2014-2015.

CRM Research Programmes consist of periods ranging between two to five months of intensive research in a given area of mathematics and its applications. Researchers from different institutions are brought together to work on open problems and to analyse the state and perspectives of their area.

Kontsevich Wins Shaw Prize

Maxim Kontsevich has won the 2012 Shaw Prize in the Mathematical Sciences "for his pioneering works in algebra, geometry and mathematical physics and in particular deformation quantization, motivic integration and mirror symmetry."

Friedrich Hirzebruch, the leading German mathematician of the second half of the twentieth century, died May 27 at the age of 84.

David Eisenbud has been named as the next Director of MSRI

This is the second time Eisenbud will have served as MSRI director; he first held the post from 1997 until the appointment of Robert Bryant in 2007. He was president of the AMS from 2003 to 2005.
