ISI Lecture Series 2025 Detailed Program

1. Description:

Three (3) short courses:

• Each course delivered over 4 consecutive days (Monday-Thursday)
• 4 consecutive hours per day (2 hours lecture, 2 hours tutorial/case study)

Capacity: Up to 100 students per course

Time:  November 4-21, 2025

Venues: Ho Chi Minh City (week 1), Vinh (week 2), Hanoi (week 3)

• Week 1: November 4-7 at Campus B, University of Ho Chi Minh City, 279 Nguyen Tri Phuong, Dien Hong ward, Ho Chi Minh City
• Week 2: November 11-14 at Vinh University, No. 182 Le Duan street, Truong Vinh ward, Nghe An province.
• Week 3: November 18-21 at Vietnam Academy of Finance, No. 58, Le Van Hien St., Dong Ngac Wrd., Hanoi.
• Public lecture by Prof. Kerrie Mengersen: 15h00 November 19, 2025 at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), 161 Huynh Thuc Khang Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi.

2. Topic & Schedule: Foundations and Applications of Bayesian Statistics

• Day 1: Introduction to Bayesian Statistics and Bayesian computation
• Day 2: Extensions: hierarchical linear models, spatial models, mixtures
• Day 3: Bayesian graphical models and Bayesian networks
• Day 4: Bayesian machine learning

3. Case Studies:

• Description of real world applications relevant to lecture content. No hands-on coding in class, but data and code provided to students.
• Presentation: Slides presented in English; translation in Vietnamese provided to students (Both English and Vietnamese slides could be displayed if the room allows it)

4. Prerequisites:

• Minimum completion of second year statistics courses.
• Familiarity with regression models, probability.
• Some knowledge of coding (Course material will be in R but students will not need to know this)
• No knowledge of Bayesian statistics is required.
