Mini-Course: Modern Numerical Methods for PDEs: Exponential Time Integration and Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

Objective: The objective of this mini-course is to provide an introduction to modern numerical methods for partial differential equations (PDEs), emphasizing two fundamental and complementary components of PDE computation: spatial discretization and time integration. The first part of the course will present new exponential time integration methods for stiff and highly oscillatory evolution equations, including parabolic problems such as diffusion-reaction systems and hyperbolic problems such as wave equations. The second part will introduce discontinuous Galerkin methods, which are widely used spatial discretization methods for hyperbolic conservation laws, convection-dominated problems, convection-diffusion equations, and related PDEs. By bringing together these two topics, the course will give participants a broad perspective on the design, analysis, and implementation of high-order numerical methods for PDEs. The course is designed for advanced undergraduate students, graduate (MSc/PhD) students, and researchers in Vietnam, who are interested in numerical analysis, scientific computing, and computational methods for differential equations, and aims to expose them to both the basic principles and recent advances in numerical PDEs and scientific computing.
