Mini-Course: Mathematical Patterns: EEG Dynamics and Finite Field Combinatorics

Objective

This one-day mini-course consists of three lectures covering two areas of current research. The first lecture presents an application of Dynamic Mode Decomposition to the extraction of discriminative high-frequency patterns from nonstationary EEG data, with an application to the classification of alcoholic and control groups. The second and third lectures focus on Fourier analysis over finite fields. They introduce the finite-field restriction problem and the Erd\H{o}s--Falconer distance problem, explain the connections between them, and discuss consequences of Fourier hypotheses for distance problems, additive combinatorics, and families of cryptographic functions. 

Expected participants: Senior undergraduate students, graduate students, or junior researchers.
