Complex Monge-Ampère equations are ubiquitous in complex geometry, as the Ricci curvature of a Kahler form can be expressed by a complex Monge-Ampère operator. In 1976, Bedford and Taylor solved the first instance of the Dirichlet problem for complex Monge-Ampère equations in pseudoconvex domains of C^n, demonstrating that the operator can be effectively defined for continuous plurisubharmonic functions. A few years later, they extended their theory to encompass plurisubharmonic functions that are merely bounded. The seemingly modest difference in regularity (bounded vs. continuous) required them to develop an entire framework, now known as ’pluripotential theory,’ which has since proven highly valuable in several complex variables analysis, analytic geometry, and many adjacent fields such as differential geometry and complex dynamics.

Pluripotential theory has also evolved as an independent field of research, presenting numerous internal challenges and discoveries that have led to significant applications. A notable example is the use of techniques developed by Cegrell and Kołodziej, which have played a pivotal role in birational geometry. In recent years, the field has seen a surge of remarkable results, including the development of new pluripotential tools and innovative applications.

Pluripotential theory is currently a highly active field of research, drawing on a broad array of techniques from algebraic geometry (such as birational geometry, moduli spaces, and non-Archimedean geometry) and geometric analysis (including nonlinear PDEs and metric asymptotics). Fifty years after its inception, the time seems ideal to bring together leading experts to give lectures for interested students, foster collaboration across generations of researchers, review past achievements, discuss ongoing work, and explore future directions for the field.
