Technion Mini-Courses: Selected Topics in Modern Mathematics

Objective

The mini-course is organized around 2 parts:
"Dimension theory of stationary fractal measures" - Ariel Rapaport:
This part will give an introduction to the dimension theory of stationary fractal measures. It will begin with some basic notions from fractal geometry, such as Hausdorff dimension and dimension of measures, and then discuss central examples including self-similar and self-affine measures. A main theme will be the relationship between the dimension of these measures and natural dynamical quantities such as entropy and Lyapunov exponents. In recent years, there has been substantial progress in this area, and in the later parts of the mini-course will touch on some of these developments.
 
"Hecke algebras in representation theory" - Max Gurevich:
This part will introduce Hecke algebras through their connections with the representation theory of symmetric groups and general linear groups over finite and p-adic fields. We will begin with classical theories of finite Hecke algebras, basics of the representation theory of S_n, and some of its geometric features. We will then move on to affine Hecke algebras and their role in the representation theory of GL_n(Q_p), including the Zelevinsky/Langlands classification. We will conclude with a glimpse of how related Hecke-algebraic and Weyl-group combinatorics appear in questions of sphericity for other classical groups.

Target Audience

Mathematics students towards the end of their undergraduate studies, researchers and advanced graduate students working in related areas.

Prerequisites

"Dimension theory of stationary fractal measures": Minimal background in measure theory is needed, mainly familiarity with definitions such as a sigma-algebra and a measure. 

"Hecke algebras in representation theory": Basic familiarity with rings, group theory and linear algebra. Background in basic concepts of representation theory (or ring modules) is a big advantage, but not a must.
