Abstract: Lattices are used to construct locally symmetric spaces from symmetric spaces. I’ll explain the notions of symmetric spaces, locally symmetric spaces, their associated homogeneous spaces and their significance. We then look at the problems characterizing symmetric spaces and locally symmetric spaces and the related problems. Finally, we discuss rigidity and local rigidity results together with Zimmer's program.
