3. Abstract
The rapid evolution of digital tools offers a unique pivotal moment to move beyond traditional testing and truly transform university pedagogy. This talk explores how the sophisticated online assessment system, STACK, serves as a catalyst for this educational shift.
We will begin with an introduction to STACK’s core capabilities, demonstrating how it goes beyond simple multiple-choice questions to evaluate complex mathematical expressions. The session will then delve into two distinct environments:
- Formative Assessment: How continuous, high-quality feedback loops empower students and reshape day-to-day teaching methodologies.
- High-Stakes Digital Exams: The logistics, integrity, and pedagogical shifts required when scaling STACK for summative assessments.
Finally, the talk will highlight practical insights from a recent linear algebra project. By focusing on the concept of productive failure, we will examine how structured, unsuccessful problem-solving attempts can be leveraged to deepen conceptual understanding and foster student resilience. Attendees will leave with a reimagined view of online assessment—not just as a grading mechanism, but as a core pillar of effective learning design.
Note: This seminar is jointly organized by the VIASM Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation ( VCTLI) and The Innovative Education Group (IEG).
