Fröberg characterized all squarefree monomial ideals generated in degree 2 which have a linear resolution. A similar characterization for monomial ideals of higher degree seems to be impossible. Only partial results are known. On the other hand it can be shown that the  squarefree monomial ideals with the property that all its monomial localizations have a linear resolution  are precisely  the matroidal ideals. In this lecture I report on a joint paper with Somayeh Bandari where  it is conjectured that a monomial ideal is polymatroidal if and only if all  its monomial localizations have a linear resolution. This conjecture is proved in several cases.
