Talk title: Evolutionary machine learning as the next frontier in AI

Time15:00 - 16:30, Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

Seminar: Hybrid seminar (onsite at VIASM and online) [Registration here]

Abstract: The success of bio-inspired computing as embodied by deep neural networks over the last two decades has been very breathtaking. In this talk I shall discuss the use of another basic paradigm derived from biology and applied in computation, natural evolution, and its advantages for Artificial Intelligence.  After setting the context, we shall look in particular at Genetic Programming, one of the areas of what is now known as evolutionary machine learning. The talk will introduce its basic ideas, discuss the current status and its challenges.

Bio: Wolfgang Banzhaf is the John R. Koza Chair for Genetic Programming at Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA. His research interests are in the field of bio-inspired computing, notably evolutionary computation and complex adaptive system, and in particular genetic programming and artificial life. He is the (co-)author of more than 300 scientific contributions, including 3 books. He served as chair of ACM SIGEVO, founding editor-in-chief of the SpringerNature journal ‘Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines’ and was the first editor-in-chief of the annual GECCO conference proceedings. In 2003, he became Senior Fellow of the Intl. Society for Genetic and Evolutionary Computation (now ACM SIGEVO), won the EvoStar Award for major contributions to Evolutionary Computation in Europe in 2007 and just recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Intl. Society for Artificial Life (ISAL).
